How video content has changed content consumption forever

Way back in 2017, Cisco revealed that by 2022, globally, 82% percent of all consumer internet traffic would be videos. That shouldn’t come as a surprise because it was already on the rise, globally, with more than half of all consumer internet traffic being video content at the end of 2016. 

 

Safe to say- Video content, be it short-form or subscription streaming or Live streaming, is here to stay. And it isn’t changing the way you consume content, it has already changed the content consumption game completely, and it isn’t likely to stop!

 

Cisco also predicted that globally by 2022, three trillion minutes of video content would cross the interweb per month, that’s about 1.1 million minutes of video content downloaded or streamed, every second! 

 

Meet The 2022 Front Runner, The Short-Form Video Content: 

 

Today, the enjoyable, digestible, short-form video content on social media platforms, such as, TikTok, Instagram Reels, Snapchat, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn and more, is leading the way for internet video content, but what is it? Roughly, globally it seems no one can agree on how short is short-form video content. But it is estimated that it is somewhere between 60 secs and 2 minutes and 20 seconds. The format, while it seems fresh, is not necessarily new, back in the day, we had Vines, a short-form video content hosting platform, which sadly set a benchmark for the future of video content consumption and disappeared.

So, why is it the most popular and loved form of content consumption? It’s simple, because it’s short, memorable and engaging. It resonates with your consumer and is very relatable. But it’s also created a win-win situation, now social media marketers are also keen on investing in short-form video content. Why? According to Hubspot Blogs’ Marketing Industry Trends Survey 2022– it has the highest Return On Investment (ROI)! 

 

So, What About The Long-Form Video Content? 

 

While social media platforms have tutored their algorithms to support the boom of short-form video content, YouTube still holds the top spot for this type of content. 

So, what is it? Any video that packs value, has a beginning, a middle and an end, and is generally 10 minutes long or more. A good example is Tedx Talks 

 

The biggest difference between the long-form and short-form video content is that the former is great for brands and businesses that want to convey their philosophy, strengthen their branding, podcasts and pack in values that they stand for, the latter is great for sharing on social media platforms. 

 

While YouTube has enjoyed the top spot for long-form video content, it isn’t particularly a crowd-favorite, anymore. There’s a more engaged audience on a slightly different format that we explore next: 

 

LIVE Streaming Video Content: It’s Immersive! 

 

When you see it from the consumption perspective, the LIVE streaming format allows you to immerse yourself in the experience. Be it product demos, Q&A sessions, LIVE event coverage, gaming demos, etc. The best part of this format is the real-time engagement with the host(s) of the LIVE stream, and those featured in it- now that sounds, looks and feels pretty realistic.
